”Indie” means independent. These games do not have famous publishers behind them like Microsoft or Nintendo. They do not have well-known titles like Super Mario. If Nintendo announces a new Mario game, a lot of people will like it simply because it is a Mario game. Indie games don’t have this luxury. They need to have original ideas to draw attention to themselves. They have a low budget, so there is not a lot of advertisements for them. So they have to come up with an interesting story, gameplay mechanic or they have to create a good atmosphere.

Fun Fact: When Minecraft was released, it was an indie game.
